BSNL to launch free unlimited mobile calls plan at Rs 149

The state-run telecom company BSNL has something interesting in the near future. The company is all set to offer all India free calling on any network in just Rs.149/- per month. Along with the free calling, the pack will also offer 300 MB of data. The users will be able to send 100 free SMS both local and national as well in this pack.

The reason for such plans coming out from almost every company is as simple as one can think. If Reliance Industries didn’t enter the telecom market in September and disrupted the whole price scenario, we might have been paying the same amount that we used to pay. The Reliance Jio not only forced every company to lower down the 4G prices, but it also forced them to at least reduce the call rates.

Big players like Airtel, Vodafone, and BSNL, are working hard to come up with a solution to the ‘problem’ named Reliance Jio. But, BSNL is the only company after Reliance Jio which is going to offer completely free calling across the nation on all networks at such a low price. The pack BSNL is going to offer like that of Jio. The amount of data is also similar. The only difference is messages which are free in Jio, but the BSNL users will get only 100 free messages.

BSNL working to reduce cost of operations

BSNL is also increasing its fiber optics usage by accommodating it in voice calling. At present, it offers broadband services only to 12 million subscribers. With optics coverage of 7-lakh route kilometers, the number of subscribers is low.

The unlimited voice calling will also put a lot of financial pressure on the company as it has to pay the price of interconnection points to other telecom companies. By using the fiber optics network, BSNL will reduce the cost.

The state-run telecom company is aiming not only at retaining the existing customers but also increasing the user base by offering low cost calling and data. The strategy is like Reliance Jio. Still, Jio is facing a lot of network issues which BSNL might not face.

Losses have reduced in the last couple of years

Before 2014, BSNL was a loss-bearing company which needed a change in administration. In the year 2015-2016, the company saw a major change in the profits. The losses of the company fell down from Rs.8234 crore per annum to Rs.3879 crore per annum. This is a breakthrough for the company as it is looking at a brighter future in coming years.

In September, BSNL also launched unlimited broadband at Rs.249/-. It also launched 3G plan at Rs.1099/- without any data cap. The company is trying its level best to reduce the losses. It is on its way to become a state-run profit making company, and it looks like the day is not far for BSNL. The change in administration with NDA government and recent steps taken by telecom ministry had a positive effect. The faith in BSNL is coming back, and the new plan will add new customers for the company.
