The future of photography is promising. On the one hand, companies are finding new dimensions in DSLRs and on the other hand, they are exploring the possibilities for mirrorless cameras. According to a large group of photography experts, if companies like Canon, Nikon, etc. work on the mirrorless camera range, they can create a huge difference in the market. It looks like Canon is at least planning to get serious in the mirrorless professional cameras.
The company has launched the new EOS M5 in the mirrorless series. This is the fifth entry in the interchangeable lens series. There are a lot of features which makes M5 special and a good competition for cameras like Sony A6300. Though on the video front, A6300 is much better than M5, Canon can learn from the drawbacks and come with a much better mirrorless option in the future.
Features of Canon EOS M5
The camera features a 24MP Dual Pixel APS-C CMOS Sensor. This is the same sensor Canon has used in its mid-range professional camera 80D. The sensor is capable of providing much better autofocus speed and tracking performance as compared to M3. The company claims that the image quality on M5 will match or surpass the image quality of 80D.
The company has kept its design more like its traditional DSLRs. This is the first time Canon has incorporated a built-in electronic viewfinder. The camera has rubber based grip cover over the body which provides better handling options. The touchscreen present on the back of the camera can tilt and rotate. It is useful while taking low angle shots, shooting a video and taking selfies as well.
This is the first time Canon has worked on dual stabilization system. It is offering Hybrid stabilization using both optic stabilizing and camera’s inbuilt IS system to provide better control over the possible shake.
- The sensor size of the camera is 22.3 x 14.9mm.
- The ISO range of EOS M5 is 100 – 25600.
- The camera comes with a hotshoe for attaching off camera flash and trigger.
- It has 49 phase detection autofocus points.
- The shutter speed of the camera is between 30 seconds to 1/4000 second.
- It can shoot video up to [email protected]
- The camera is equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and NFC.
- It can shoot up to 295 photographs on a single
- The dimensions of the camera are 116 x 89 x 61 mm.
Image transfer capabilities
The camera comes with Wi-Fi, always on Bluetooth and NFC. The user can transfer the images instantly on a smart device with app support. The Bluetooth Low Energy system sounds very similar to Nikon’s Snapbridge.
The main issue with the camera is the absence of 4K video support. This may drawback a few users from buying this piece of technology. Otherwise, the overall specs of the camera are good and worth the money. Canon is also offering a kit with 18-150mm f3.5-6.3 lens with image stabilization other than just body pack. There is also an adapter available for USD 99 which can allow the user to use the lenses meant for Canon DSLR cameras. The base price of Canon EOS M5 is $1099 with 15-45mm lens.
