So, finally, it’s the Silicon Valley of India, Bengaluru which is preferred by Cupertino based tech giant Apple as their manufacturing base. Other Indian states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Telangana too were willing to have this Apple facility, but Apple has finally selected Bangalore. Even though this news was reported earlier in December but was not confirmed actually. And now with the Karnataka Government issuing the release to Apple, we are 100 percent confirmed about this happening. So, the time is not away when people will talk about ‘Made in India iPhone’.
This decision by Apple is a clear indication of how powerful and valued India is becoming with days. India will become the third country now to assemble iPhone. The new manufacturing base in Bengaluru will be based out of Peenya Industrial area. The production of iPhone in India is expected to start in another three months, in June probably. And every needed facility will be provided by the Karnataka government to accelerate the production process. However, anything about the volume of initial production or else other specifics of the production plan is not disclosed yet.
Such a proposal by Apple has amused the state and the country as well highly. The BT and state IT Minister Priyank Kharge has stated that such an intention of Apple to commence manufacturing base in Bangalore will definitely promote the technology eco-system in the state. Not just that rather it will also have the great impact on the supply chain development in Bengaluru as stated by Kharge.
According to the report, the tech giant Apple will collaborate with Taiwanese company Wistron for this project. Wistron already have an existing facility in Bengaluru, Peenya and Apple will partner with that facility to assemble their iPhones. This Taiwanese company is the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) of Apple, and this is the reason Apple published about numerous job openings in their OEM in the last December.
If this project is executed successfully, it will become the second big project of Apple in Bengaluru. The company has announced of setting up their design and development accelerator in the last year May in order to cultivate the iOS developer community. So, this state of India it seems is preferred a lot by Apple to grow their business.
The recent project ‘manufacturing operation’ of Apple in Bengaluru is already finalized, and according to sources the state minister and officials have met various senior persons of Apple in this regard. Cupertino-based Priya Balasubramaniam, the VP of iPhone operations, Dheeraj Chugh, the director of iPhone operations, and senior manager government affairs Ali Khanafer are the executives from Apple with whom the Karnataka Government has met.
Such a decision by Apple has no doubt put India in a different stead while the government has promised to help the company in every possible situation. However, this will not affect the interest of other local companies, and it seems this will help the company to price their iPhone now more competitively.
