Japan has been a pioneer in technology for a long time. But, in the past few years, China and South Korea went ahead of Japan. Both the countries make the most impressive gadgets of the present time. At the moment, China has the fastest computer in the world i.e. Sunway Taihulight. It is capable of doing 93 petaflops calculations (93 quadrillion calculations per second). The companies in Japan outsource the data crunching job to Google, Microsoft, and Sekiguchi.
Japan’s big step forward
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan is investing 19.5 Billion Yen ($172 million) in a supercomputer. The unnamed project is an effort to bring back Japan’s leadership in the field of technology.
The sources who are working on the project said that the work on the machine would start early next year. The upcoming supercomputer by Japan will be able to do 130 quadrillion calculations per second. This will help the scientists in the country to develop and improve technology. It will help in the field of driverless cars, robotics, and medical diagnosis.
Satoshi Sekiguchi is a director general at Japan’s ?National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. He said that there is nothing out there that is as fast as the supercomputer they are building. The PM of Japan, Shinzo Abe has called the companies, bureaucrats, and the political class. He requested everyone to work together to bring back the edge that Japan had in the field of technology.
What’s happening around the world in terms of supercomputing?
Google’s AlphaGo is a DeepMind AI program. It defeated South Korean professional Lee Seedol in the ancient board game of Go. A computer that can mimic the human brain’s neural pathways is a big deal in the field of technology. Japan is aiming to use ultra fast calculations to speed up advancements in AI. This will help in improving the performance of the computer and analyze score of data.
China is using the Sunway Taihulight weather forecasting, pharmaceutical research, industrial design. It is also used in a lot of other projects.
The new computer ABCI (AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure) is open for bidding. The bidding will end on December 8th, 2016. The company Fujitsu Ltd. developed the fastest computer in Japan (Oakforest-PACS). It has not revealed if it is going to bid on the project. The computer that they made was capable of 13.6 petaflops which are only 10% of the upcoming computer. But, the company said that it is keen to be a part of the project.
It will be free for the corporations in Japan which are outsourcing their data-crunching jobs. With such speed, the tech world can see a lot of changes in coming years. Japan is trying to get its edge back in the field of technology. It may start a new war over supercomputing capabilities among all the advanced nations.
