It looks like Mumbai stole an idea from Delhi and implemented it before Delhi could even begin with it! Jokes apart, it is a good news for all Mumbaikars. MumbaiWiFi has officially started its operations. The Chief Minister of the State Devendra Fadnavis launched the first phase of the services. Dubbed as the largest WiFi network in India and one of the biggest in the world, the first phase has 500 WiFi hotspots across the state.
There is a lot to come
In the test phase of the services between Jan 2 to 8 2017, near about 23000 users signed up. Mr. Fadnavis informed in his statement that these users downloaded over 2 TB data. He said that it is a major aspect of the digital empowerment of the state. Under the new services, MumbaiWiFi will establish a total of 1200 WiFi hotspots in the city. That means in the next 4 months, the city will get additional 700 hotpots. The target will be achieved before May 1st which is celebrated as Maharashtra Day.
The services are free for short period
The WiFi services are free till 31st Jan 2017. It is now available in many important locations such as Mumbai Police Commissioner, Vidhan Bhawan, KalaNagar in Bandra, Bombay High Court, and other prominent places. There are multiple companies involved in the process. Maharashtra Information Technology Corporation has tied up with Hewlett Packard and Fortinet for the technical support. Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd is providing the bandwidth while Larsen & Toubro is providing support as a systems integrator.

With WiFi hotspots across the city, it will be much easier for the residents as well as visitors to connect to the internet from anywhere in the city.

The new WiFi services will mark Mumbai’s presence on the Global map in terms of the city with WiFi hotspots. The trend of WiFi hotspots in India has recently started and among others, Indian Railway is working in the area as well. Recently Google has completed the first phase of 100 Stations with WiFi services in association with Indian Railway.
