Review: The Google Nexus 5X – With Fingerprint Sensor

As was long expected Google introduced a new Nexus 5X. Nexus 5X is a third Nexus smartphone that LG made. The price of the device is Rs. 31,990/- (for 16 GB model) and Rs.35,900 ( for 32 GB model). The cost can be called competitive. However, it is not yet clear if the smartphone will live up to the name and the expectations that are pretty high coming from the price.

The “X” in the name is supposed to tell us that the manufacturer tried really heard to make some improvements to the 2-year old Nexus 5. However, the phone looks really different from its previous version, But Nexus 5 still has some of its old buddy’s features.

The Nexus 5X is pretty similar to its cousin Nexus 6P. They released simultaneously, and many of their features are exactly the same. Nexus 5X is the cheaper one of the two and made by LG, which is good on one hand and not so good on the other. So let’s look at what the new Nexus 5X has to offer.

Build and Design

The size of the new smartphone is 147.0 x 72.6 x 7.9mm. The device weighs only 136 g that is rather light and feels nice in your hands. Thanks to the form of the smartphone it is comfortable to hold. You can easily call this a compact model that will fit people with small hands. Despite the fact that the phone has a plastic body, it looks rather sophisticated. All in all the device looks pretty elegant. The matte case adds even more sleekness to the smartphone’s look. The new device comes in the following color: Charcoal Black, Quartz White, and Ice Blue.

Unlike it’s “cousin” Huawei’s Nexus 6P, which was also launched in India recently, Nexus 5X has a single front speaker at the bottom of the device. Such absence of stereo speakers will definitely affect the sound quality when making calls in open space areas, especially in loud places.

The new Nexus 5X features Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 808 processor, 1.8 GHz hexa-core 64-bit, Adreno 418 GPU. RAM is a not so great 2 GB. Internal storage depends on the model you chose: 16 GB or 32 GB. Just like the 6P the new smartphone features USB Type-C, a new faster Google Camera app, and Nexus Imprint. Which means that there is a new fingerprint sensor. Fingerprint sensor placed on the back of the device. This sensor will help you unlock your phone, make purchases and sign in to the applications.

The smartphone offers the following connectivity: 4G LTE Cat 6 (one nano-SIM), It has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth version 4.2. NFC, GPS, GLONASS, and a digital compass. Also, there are such sensors as a fingerprint sensor, Sensor Hub, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Barometer, Proximity sensor, ambient light sensor, hall sensor and Android Context Hub.

Display 7/10

The display is a capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. The size of the screen is 5,2 inches, which is about 69.8% screen-to-body ratio. The resolution of the screen is 1080 x 1920 pixels (~424-pixel density). The screen is multi-touch and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and oleophobic coating

Now let’s talk about the cameras. Here a pretty good job was done. Nexus 5X features a rear- 12.3-megapixel camera with IR Laser-Assisted autofocus and a 5 MP frontal camera to satisfy your selfie needs. The camera takes pretty decent shots when the light is good and bright. However, once you start making photos in dark areas, the results are not so great. The Same story is with the front camera. You will have to find some bright light to make good selfies. Otherwise, the quality suffers. The rear camera of the device can capture 4K videos. The frontal camera video quality reached 1080p

Here we can applaud the manufacturer for giving this phone a brand new version of Android OS. The 6.0 Marshmallow. One of the bonus features here is the fingerprint sensor. Another great thing about the Android 6.0 Marshmallow system is a new and improved management of the downloadable applications. Imagine that you will no longer need to agree to all those unpleasant options when the downloaded applications ask you for access to all the features of the smartphone. Now it will only ask for really needed ones. Also, Android 6.0 offers good power management. It will save some battery life for you and perhaps you will live through the second day without finding your charger.

The Nexus 5X performance should be decent thanks to good insides of the device. However, it depends on what you believe to be good for yourself. If you want a smartphone that shoots videos while showing you a movie and allowing you to play a game, then Nexus 5X is not for you. However, if you want a good smartphone at a reasonable price, then you will be stratified with the performance of this device.

The Nexus 5X has a 2,700mAh battery that allows you to enjoy the smartphone’s performance even longer without charging it.

Overall this is an excellent device for its money. If you want something a little more complicated you can go for the “cousin” Nexus 6P. However most users will be satisfied with the options offered by Nexus 5X. The set of features is pretty standard for this type of smartphone, which means it can satisfy the needs of most customers.
