Xiaomi is a privately owned Chinese company that has its headquarters in Beijing, China. The company mainly deals in designing, developing and selling smartphones and other consumer based electronics. The company also makes fitness trackers, air purifiers, TVs, and tablets. For the Android-based tablets and phones, the company also has its own skin named as MIUI. It is known for selling its smartphones in India via flash sales.
There was a lot of noise about the two handsets that were expected to hit the market soon. The company has finally launched Xiaomi Mi 5s and Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus for the Chinese market. Both the smartphones come in two different variants based on memory. They are available in four different color variants that are Gold, Rose Gold, Silver, and White. The phones will be available from 29th September 2016 for Chinese consumers via flash sales on JD.com and Mi.com.
Both the phones are similar on the communication front. Both support dual SIM over GSM and CDMA network. They support only Nano-SIM. They can connect with 2G, 3G, and 4G LTE bands. For other connectivity option, they have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2, and GPS via A-GPS, GLONASS and BDS depending on the location. Both the models have NFS chipset for mobile payments and an infrared port for controlling IR enabled home appliances. For wired connectivity, they use Type-C 1.0 reversible connector port.
Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus run on Android 6.0 marshmallow with company’s own MIUI on the top. The phones are equipped with audio and video editor as well as a player along with document viewer. They support active noise cancellation with dedicated mic. Both the phones support quick charging and can reach up to 83% in just 30 minutes. The phones have a fingerprint sensor for quick unlocking along with an accelerometer, gyro, proximity, and barometer sensors and compass for better user experience.

As the name suggests, this phone lacks a little behind its big brother Mi 5s Plus in terms of innards. The phone features a 5.15-inch full-HD capacitive touchscreen display with 16M colors. The display has the screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels that give the pixel density of approx 428 ppi. The screen-to-body ratio is approx 71.4 percent. It supports multi-touch and comes with screen protection.
On the processor end, the phone does not fail to impress. It has the latest Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 chipset coupled with the quad-core processor. The two out of four Kyro cores are clocked at 2.15 GHz while the remain two cores are clocked at 1.6 GHz. The phone also packs Adreno 530 GPU which gives superior graphics and gaming experience.
As mentioned in the beginning, the phone comes in two variants based on the RAM and internal storage. The first variant has 3 GB RAM with 64 GB storage capacity. The second variant has 4 GB RAM with 128 GB storage capacity. The company has not given any option to increase the storage capacity in any of the variants. The only option left for the users is to use cloud service like Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
Camera supports slow motion videos
The Camera of the phone is very strong. It comes with 12 MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture. The sensor size is 1/2.3″ and the pixel size is 1.55µm. The rear camera support features like phase detection autofocus, autofocus, touch focus, geo-tagging, face, and smile detection, panorama and auto-HDR. It can shoot videos in two resolutions that are [email protected] and [email protected] The latter one is the resolution of slow motion video. Mi 5s also comes with a 4 MP front camera with aperture f/2.0. The sensor size of the front camera is 1/3″ while the pixel size is 2µm. It can shoot videos at [email protected]
The phone packs Non-removable 3200 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0 support. The dimensions of the phone are 145.6 x 70.3 x 8.3 mm and it weighs 145 grams. The Xiaomi Mi 5s 3GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant has the MRP of CNY 1,999 which roughly makes Rs. 20,000. The 4GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant has the MRP of CNY 2,299 which roughly Rs. 22,900.
Features of Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus
This model is little better than the Mi 5s in terms of innards. It comes with 5.7-inch full-HD IPC LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16M colors. The screen resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels that give the pixel density of 386 ppi. The screen-to-body ratio is approx 74.6 percent, and it supports multi-touch as well.
Regarding processor, it has the latest chipset. It comes with Qualcomm MSM8996 Snapdragon 821 chipset coupled with the quad-core processor. Just like the Mi 5s the cores are clocked at different values. The first two Kyro cores are clocked at 2.35 GHz while the remaining two Kyro cores are clocked at 1.6 GHz. The phone also carries Adreno 530 GPU which is one of the finest GPU available for mobile phones. It gives great graphics and gaming experience.
The phone has two different variants based on RAM and memory. The first variant has 4 GB RAM with 64 GB internal storage. The second variant has 6 GB RAM with 128 GB internal storage. The Mi 5s Plus is among a few models available in the market with 6 GB RAM. This phone does not have any card slot. If the user wants extra space, either he has to choose a higher model or choose to go for cloud services like Dropbox or Google drive.

The Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage variant has the MRP of CNY 2,299 which roughly makes Rs. 22,900. The 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant has the MRP of CNY 2,599 which roughly Rs. 26,000.
